Easy Ways to Help Keep Your Motorbike Secure

October 8th, 2011

Motorcycle theft is a large and growing problem in the UK, with around 30,000 bikes being stolen or going missing every year. Many people think that their bike will be safe at home, but it might surprise you that the vast majority of bike thefts occur from the home of the owner (up to 80% according to some sources).

So how can you keep your motorbike secure and stop yourself becoming part of these statistics? The easiest way to help prevent theft from your home is to not advertise that you own an expensive bike – don’t keep it parked on the street or in your garden, as you’re just tempting potential thieves. Keep your bike secured in a lockable area (such as a garage), or if you don’t have access to something like this you can keep the bike inside your house. If you don’t have the room or you park your vehicle away from your house, then ensure it’s in a well lit area (putting off potential thieves) and consider covering your bike, so people can’t see the make and model.

You should also consider investing in security devices designed specifically for this problem; immobilisers can work extremely well, as can additional alarms. You can also invest in a wheel clamp, which is usually enough to put people off trying to steal the bike.

In addition to extra security devices, you should also consider getting your bike marked (both the chassis and individual parts). This might be enough to put off a potential thief, but more importantly it gives you a much better chance of having your bike recovered if it is stolen. You’d be surprised how few stolen bikes get recovered, with some sources estimating that around 85% of stolen bikes never get found.

You should also make sure you never, ever leave your keys with the bike. This might sound obvious, but you’d be surprised how many thefts of motorcycles involve the thief having the keys to the bike. Always keep your keys on your person, and never leave them with anyone you don’t know or in (or on) the bike itself.

As well as decreasing the risks of you having your bike stolen, keeping it as secure as possible will also reduce your insurance costs in most cases, so there really is no reason for not doing it. Just make sure if you do move your bike to a more secure location or add additional security devices, make sure you let your insurance company know.
